Description

This a contest entry for My Peaceful Place by :iconlove-new-artists:

I've always liked trees. They fascinate me. There's something in how they're fixed in place lasting for hundreds of years and still constantly changing. I love seeing them all over the landscape. One of my favourite trees is a big oak across the street from my window. The other one was a horse-chestnut that used to grow on my grand mom's yard. I was upset when I found out someone had cut that tree down.

I'm not sure why the upper part of the photo isn't as sharp as the rest of it. I don't have a proper photo manipulation program on my computer so I tried to make the photo to look as close to the original as possible by adding a variety of gradient maps to achieve the proper effects. The process took me nearly 2 hours.

Techniques used in the painting are watercolours and watercolour pencils.

I'm in Finland so trees have no leaves at the moment. However there was a small about 4-5 meters tall maple in a nearby forest that kept some of it's leaves for the longest time. All the other trees around it were barren. Even the plants on the ground had turned into the grayish brown colour. The only colours in that scenery were the green leaves of the small maple both the ones still in the tree and the ones it had shed to the ground (I don't know if 'shed' is the right word here but it's the only one I can think of). Now the small maple no longer has leaves. The snow and cold took them.

The small maple was an inspiration for the setting of this painting. Even if everything appears cold and dead there's always hope to be found in world.

I love to seat under the trees just like that!
